Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct — Players

  • I will not berate the officials or trash talk my opponent. Respectful celebrations of a nice play are encouraged, but may not cross the line into taunting.
  • I will help my opponent off the floor when he is down.
  • I will support my teammates whether they are starters or reserves, returning players or new players, and will encourage them when they are having an off day.
  • I will be silent while my opponent shoots free throws.
  • I will not use profanity or offensive language.
  • I will not engage in unnecessary or excessive physical contact with my opponents.
  • I will encourage good sportsmanship and demonstrate positive support and respect for all players, coaches, parents, fans, volunteers working at the scorer’s table, and officials at every game.
  • I will exercise self-control and place the emotional and physical well-being of my teammates and opponents ahead of my personal desire to win.
  • I will remember that participating in the league is a privilege.
  • I will remain mindful that my conduct, including my body language, influences the respect that other athletes, coaches, parents, and the public hold for the league.
  • I will respect my opponent, be modest when successful, and gracious in defeat.

Code of Conduct — Parents and Fans

  • I will demonstrate positive support for all players, coaches, contest administrators, and officials at every game, and encourage other spectators to participate in the spirit of good sportsmanship.
  • I will place the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of my personal desire to win.
  • I will learn the rules of the game in order to be a more informed spectator.
  • I will remember that the game is for the kids, not the adults. I will let the coaches coach, and will not contact players once they step on the court, as doing so would distract and confuse the players, undermine the coach, and deprive the children of learning opportunities in the moment.
  • I will be supportive after the game — win or lose — by recognizing good effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • I will remain mindful that my conduct influences the respect that other athletes, coaches, parents, and the public hold for the league.
  • I will treat players, coaches, volunteers, officials, and other parents and fans with respect.
  • I will not berate or chirp at the officials. If I have concerns about the officiating, I will raise them with my program leader, not directly with the officials or coaches.
  • I will cheer politely, and not in an objectionable or over-the-top manner.
  • I will be silent while players shoot free throws.
  • I will not use profanity or offensive language.

Code of Conduct — Coaches

  • I will remember that youth basketball is for the benefit of the players, and that my role is to teach, mentor, encourage, and lead by example.
  • I will demonstrate respect toward players, opposing coaches, officials, parents, volunteers, and fans at all times.
  • I will not berate officials, players, or opposing coaches, and I will not engage in profanity, taunting, intimidation, or unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • I will exercise self-control and remain composed during games, recognizing that my behavior influences the conduct of players, parents, and spectators.
  • I will promote good sportsmanship and fair play, and will teach players to compete with integrity, humility in victory, and grace in defeat.
  • I will place the emotional and physical well-being of players ahead of my personal desire to win.
  • I will create a positive and supportive environment for all players, including starters and reserves, experienced and developing athletes alike.
  • I will not publicly embarrass, ridicule, or demean players. Instruction and correction will be delivered in a constructive and respectful manner.
  • I will teach players to respect the game, including opponents, officials, league volunteers, facilities, and equipment.
  • I will encourage parents and fans connected to my team to conduct themselves in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner.
  • I will remain mindful that my words, actions, and body language influence the reputation of my team, program, and the league.
  • I will remember that coaching in the league is a privilege and that I serve as a role model for young athletes.
